Kid-Friendly Natural Products

Using Organic and Natural Cosmetic Products is Just As Important As Eating Organic

By now most of us know that we should be extra cautious when consuming GMOs and foods that aren’t organic, but it is equally as important to be aware of the cosmetic and household products our children are using or come in contact with.

The FDA has a similar approach to regulating personal care products as it does to food regulation (subpar), so it’s smart to get into the habit of reading all labels before you purchase products. There are thousands of chemicals the FDA overlooks and depending on which products, can get absorbed into your body. Many of the unregulated ingredients are synthetic chemicals, carcinogens, hormone disruptors and skin irritants.

Common Ingredients to Avoid

Propylene glycol: Also known as the chemical found in antifreeze. Propylene glycol is potentially toxic to the liver and kidneys, causes allergic reactions and is deemed not safe for infants or pregnant women.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate: SLS, A very common ingredients in personal care products. According to the Environmental Working Group, SLS has been linked to cancer, skin irritation and endocrine (hormone) disruption.

Benzophenone, Oxybenzone, Octinoxate: These ingredients are often found in sunscreens. We could actually write an entire blog article on the toxic ingredients in sunscreens. These chemicals may cause cancer and hormone issues. The EWG strongly warns against using Oxybenzone on children.

Fragrance: Assorted fragrance mixes found in shampoos, conditioners, lotions, etc. have been associated with allergies, dermatitis and negative effects on the reproductive system. Tip: Stick to products that use essential oils instead!
