Chair Presses for Wiggly or Lethargic Students by Julie Shullo

Chair Presses

This activity triggers your body to become aware of sensory signals from your joints, muscles, and connective tissues (also known as proprioceptive input). For students who are wiggly or even lethargic, this bodyweight activity can stimulate their sensory system so they are better able to FOCUS.

1. Sit in a chair with your feet on the floor.

2. While seated, place your hands on each side of the seat of the chair to grip it.

3. Press your weight down on your hands with your arm muscles to lift your body (hips and thighs) slightly off the chair. Your weight should be distributed to both arms.

4. Hold for 3 seconds and then slowly lower yourself back down to release the weight from your arms.

5.  Repeat 3 to 5 times.
